Amish Greetin's!

Leah's picture

Wie geht's!

I shall share with ya the pronounciation of the common Amish greetin', as many are interested in the speakin' of the Amish language. It is said, 'Vee Gates!'  This is a popular item on my website, as I introduce a new Amish word each week and include the correct pronounciation.  My dear friends are gettin' awful gut at speakin' German (as we called it in my settlement, as opposed to Pennsylvania Dutch).  Speakin' of friends, I have not heard from a dear one of mine for almost a week now ... Mrs. Carol!!!  Last we spoke, you were experiencin' some bad weather.  I am hopin' all is well and that you and yours are safe and in gut health!  I have to tell ya, Carol is a great source of information always sharin' with me interestin' pieces of information, and if ya haven't been blessed with her friendship, seek her out, as she is deligthful to speak with.  She's usually about here at the website!

I made so many friends here at Amish Cook over a year ago when I first came to fellowship with all the others particpatin' here at the website.  Kevin had such a gut thing goin' with the website and I enjoyed becomin' a very active participant.  Since then I have developed a website of my own.  It's become a wonderful-gut place of community and fellowship and we have the grandest time together.  The women, as we have no men who paricipate, are just amazin' women and I love each and every one of them.  We have become such gut friends.  I've even had some Amish relatives who have come to participate, namely my cousin Caleb, who is quite a hit at the site.  He's always sharin' a gut story or two with the ladies, makin' us all long for our carefree days of our youth.  A young cousin of mine, Leona Mae, writes a weekly blog when she comes to visit each Saturday, sharin' with us all her Amish courtship with her special friend, Aaron.  Ach, how it makes me miss that special time in my own life.  But more importantly and most special of all is the support we women offer one another as we walk forth on our journeys through life.  None of this would have been possible without the Amish Cook, which honest to goodness started it all.

I have returned to the Amish Cook as I have missed chattin' with many of ya.  Also, I miss readin' Kevin's blogs, which were always quite amusin'.  He had a wonderful personality, do ya not all think so of him?  I also wish to express my gratitude to him as I know how time consuimin' runnin' a website can be.  I was unaware of this when first I came to Amish Cook ...  So without further ado ... denki Kevin for all the hard work and time ya put into the wonderful website of Amish Cook.  It is most appreciated, to be sure.

 Warm Wishes,

Leah E. Mast

Leah-----Thank you for the compliments.   I do enjoy the diversity & inclusiveness of the nonjudgemental Christians on your site.  They are so interested in & supportive of one another!   ~CS~

Re: Amish Greetin's!

I did not join the Amish church, nee.   Should I have joined the church and become a baptized member I would have found myself shunned, upon choosin' to leave the faith, as I later did.  By not joinin' the faith and becomin' a baptized member I was spared the shunnin' after my leave, however, should I return to the community in which I left, I will find myself placed in a probational bann with a provin' time in which I have to then prove my dedication to the faith.  It was always taught that it was better to not make the oath than to make the oath and to later break it.

You are very lackin' in your information about the Amish.  In Missouri, there is a huge group of us who are what you English refer to as "Ex-Amish".  We are Amish who have left the community, but who still live amongst each other and practice the lifestyle in which we were raised, to a certain degree, and with a few added exceptions, such as the use of some modern conveniences.  But if you were to ask any one of us if we are more English now today havin' left the Amish faith, or still Amish deep in our hearts, we would all answer that we are still Amish and live more like the ways of our Amish families than the English.

I suppose I could invite you to my home so you can witness for yourself my Amish lifestyle, but I'm not at all sure my cousin's would be in agreement to such an arrangement.   And I'm quite certain the distance we live from each other is greater than my horse is able to travel.  Ah well ...

Mach's gut,

Leah E. Mast

P.S. -- Hullo Cindy!  The cruise sounds like it was wonderful!

Re: Amish Greetin's!

In all honestly, I cannot pinpoint one reason alone for my decision to leave the Amish.  There were many reasons and factors for my making the decision.  But again, as I mentioned in an earlier post, I did not truly leave the Amish, simply my community.  I very much live out my Amish upbringin' today.  My life is very much more Amish than "English."  Hope that answers your question.

Re: Amish Greetin's!

Well, I always thought being Amish was a religious affiliation in addition to being a lifestyle. From what I have heard, being Amish is intrinsically linked with being a part of the larger Amishcommunity, in other words it is nearly impossible to be "more Amish than English" without actually being in the community. Please do not take offense, but do you really come from an Amish background? I am sorry but your posts seem a bit contrived.  I gather you never joined the Amish church. Sue

Re: Amish Greetin's!

I know I have been on a trip & so away from the computer for over a week now, but this comment just really strikes me as rude.  I hope no one ever asks me to really prove that I come from the background I come from!  Why should Leah need to prove to anyone that she comes from an Amish background?  Is that really our right to ask her to?  This seems to be right up there with the newspapers always mentioning that a person is Amish, but not that they are catholic or methodist or whatever.

Off the topic but welcome back!  Was the trip the cruise?

Re: Amish Greetin's!

Thank you BK!  Yes, it was the cruise!  Wonderfully relaxing!  That part had nothing to do with Carnival and everything to do with just not having anywhere or anything that I absolutely had to do! I am at my daughter's right now - will head home tomorrow - another 7 hours of driving and then back to work on Monday!

Re: Amish Greetin's!

Best vacation I ever had was a cruise.  My husband and I have said many times once all the children are moved out, we'll treat ourselves to another one Wink

Re: Amish Greetin's!

I have actually been tossing around the idea of seeing what the family would think of a family reunion cruise!  There was 1 on the ship we were on & it seems to me like it would be a blast.

My dh's sister & her dh are currently on a cruise down the Nile, I guess.  They are missionaries and I found the email after getting back on land and getting another connection.

Re: Amish Greetin's!

Hello, I had asked in an earlier post why you had left the Amish church, and never got a reply. I am still curious. Susan

Here is the link for the response you are seeking:  http://www.oasisnewsfeatures.com/new/node/1421 on the "Intrigued by the Amish?" forum.  It is immediately under Leah's original post and two messages above your question.
