Mennonite Quilting in Canada; PA. Hex Signs

St. Jacob's, Ontario is at the heart of the province's Old Order Mennonite population.  It's a charming little village with lots of quaint stores, galleries, Farmers Markets, and a wonderful visitors center.  It's not "over the top" tourism and if the US dollar weren't so weak against the Canadian currency right now I'd urge people to travel there to "check out" the area.  Also in the area is Canada's largest community of Old Order Amish.  This is a really neat article that appeared in a Toronto paper about Mennonite women that create quilts to sell at St. Jacob's annual Mennonite Reilef Sale. Meanwhile, there is an interesting article about hex signs.  I've written before that "hex signs" really aren't Amish in origin, they are more associated with early Pennsylvania German settlers of the Keystone State.  This article doesn't have anything ground-breaking in it, it's just nice to see something coming out of Pennsylvania article-wise that isn't political!

Re: Mennonite Quilting in Canada; PA. Hex Signs

I love to go to St. Jacob's and the surrounding area.  But it's a 6 hour drive from home so I don't get there very often. There is a very small town nearby that has a Mennonite general store that carries a vast array of fabric. I make sure to stop any time we are even remotely nearby  :)

Call it a friendship sign----or, a Pensylvania Dutch friendship sign.  No need to repeat the old name for it at all.  CS

Hex Signs

We have a Hex sign on our house here in CA. I ordered it online from Zook's hex signs. I think my hex sign is supposed to mean love and friendship. Since we have a very plain white house, a little color of hex sign makes it not so plain. Since we're Christians at first I was hesitant on putting up a hex sign if it was associated with evil, however upon doing more reading I've come to the conclusion that they are pretty much for decoration. I just wish they were called something different.
